Intensive operational activities of Special Forces, analytical intelligence work, effective reconnaissance and international co-operation played a part in arresting the suspected of attack on Polish soldiers. Today two months pass from the attack on Polish Provincial Reconstruction Team patrol. It took place on 21 December 2011 in the town of Rawaza in Ghazni province. IED exploded under one of the vehicles. As a result of the attack five Polish soldiers died: junior WO Piotr Ciesielski and Sergeants Łukasz Krawiec, Marcin Szczurowski, Marek Tomala and Krystian Banach.
Since the attack finding the terrorists responsible for it has been a priority for Polish soldiers in Afghanistan. A series of combat operations including precise activities of Special Forces have been carried out in Ghazni province. Officers of Military Intelligence and Counterintelligence gained information which was systematically verified and analyzed. Next, many reconnaissance operations were carried out. Every time the data concerning the suspected people were verified within ISAF information exchange.
Co-ordination of all the activities as well as close co-operation of Polish Military Contingent with Afghan services and state institutions caused that several terrorists were arrested including three directly involved in the attack on Polish soldiers.
The first terrorist was detained by Coalition Special Forces and Afghan Forces on 10th January in Nangarhar province. As a result of the operation Mashahud, who was commanding the attack on PRT specialists, was arrested. A few weeks later, at night form 8 to 9 February Special Forces soldiers captured next two terrorists suspected of participating in the attack. The arrested were specialists at planting IEDs. They come from Rawza, where the tragic accident took place. All the detentions were possible thanks to gathered operational data, systematically collected from the 21st December.
At present intensive operational and analytical activities are continued both in Poland and in Afghanistan. Common activities of Combat Groups, Special Forces and Afghan Security Forces, aiming at finding all the terrorists responsible for preparing and conducting the attack, are carried on. Close co-operation of Polish Military Contingent with local people within delivering information on potential bombers is also worth mentioning,.
